From the President
Federation Family

For this month’s column, I had intended to focus on a couple of the really cool new initiatives we have planned, but the impact of the recent hurricanes on our members deserves all of our collective attention.

Most of us have no idea what it is like to experience a hurricane bearing down on your home with sustained winds in excess of 130 mph. Federation Member Lewis Collins described the sound of it as a “freight train”. Most have never faced a mandatory evacuation order requiring us leave to behind our life’s possessions. And, we simply cannot comprehend the devastation created by the wind and flooding these storms left in their wake.

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma were historic in their own right, let alone the fact that they hit the United States one right after the other. Harvey hit Texas as a category 4 hurricane and was the largest storm that state had seen in more than 50 years. That, however, was just a warm up as it then proceeded to dump a historic 50-inches of rain which caused unprecedented flooding.

On the heels of Harvey, Irma slammed into Florida as a category 4 storm. Irma was one of the largest storms ever recorded and the first to record top winds of 185 mph for 37 consecutive hours. She left an estimated 65% of Florida without power and has caused flooding and damage in neighboring states.

The images of the destruction caused by the storms transfixes us as human beings. We are in awe of the power of nature and left with a renewed realization of our own vulnerability. The scenes captured by the news coverage touch us. When we observe the plight of those who lost everything we cannot help but have our collective hearts go out to the victims.

But the feelings are different when you know the people braving the hurricanes and flooding. We have 77 members in Texas and 82 in Florida. Many of the Texas members were directly impacted by Harvey and virtually all of our Florida members are trying to recover from the blows Irma inflicted. Knowing friends are hurting touches us deeply and our hearts ache for them.

Tough times are supposed to reveal true friends. There is no shortage of tough times for many of our members and I am very proud to report that there has been no shortage of true Federation friends. I have seen countless offers of help pouring in to help our Texas and Florida members. Anything from people opening their homes to offering temporary office space and everything in between. We have talked in the past about the Federation being family-friendly, but what events like this demonstrate is that the Federation IS family.

To those of you who have been impacted know that you have a family of nearly 1,400 who are ready to help in any way we can. Please contact me or email Debbie Boehm at Debbie@thefederation.org if there is anything you need and we will see that it happens. To our Members who have extended offers of assistance, thank you. We will let you know if anything is needed. In the meantime here's how you can help:

  • The American Red Cross provides an array of disaster relief services. To donate, call 800-RED CROSS or text HARVEY of IRMA to 90999 to make a $10 donation for those in need.

  • The United Way also accepts donations via text. Text UWFLOOD to 41444 to donate to the United Way Flood Relief Fund.

  • Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services is providing help to those displaced by Harvey and Irma. Donations can be made online at http://helpsalvationarmy.org/.

Thanks for being part of our pretty amazing Federation Family!

If your practice involves insurance, you should attend the 2017 Asia Pacific Insurance Conference (APIC 2017), October 18-20, in Singapore.

APIC is the first Asian regional conference organized by a collection of major insurance related organizations, and presents a unique opportunity to form new relationships with potential clients and referral sources in an insurance marketplace that has expanded well beyond the US into Europe, Australia and Asia. For more information and to registerclick here.
