What's Up

Exciting news for Hawaii!  In true collaborative fashion, the Law Practice Management Section will be teaming up with the Employment Practices Section (Chair, Paul Finamore) and the Life, Health & Disability Section (Chair, Thayla Bohn) to present a combined program discussing the difficulties of balancing the realities of legal work and business with insight into employment law topics, including practical issues such as dealing with older, unproductive partners; attorneys with health or dependency issues; motivating millennials; and, female attorneys who are pregnant.

Early discussions with Paul and Thayla, as well as the support and guidance already received from Program Chair, Bob Christie lead me to conclude that this will be a program with something for as wide of a spectrum of our Membership as imaginable.  Stay tuned for more details.

Important!

OCTOBER 2017

Thank Goodness!

Forgive the absence of any submission for the month of September for the LPM Section.  It is hurricane season, and Irma decided to show up down South and with a particularly nasty disposition.  Manners, as we all know, are indispensable, and showing up uninvited is, in the words of the great American Jurist, Learned Hand, "Fraught with peril."  Our prayers were answered, because it appears that most of our fellow Federates made it through Irma safely and largely intact.

What's Up

Now that Irma's nastiness is behind us, there is good news to report for the LPM Section.  I am incredibly excited to report that our LPM Vice Chair for Section Meeting Programming, has a dynamite presentation scheduled for the Winter Meeting in February, 2018 in Amelia Island, Florida.  With the help of Lauren Curtis of Traub Lieberman Straus & Shrewsberry LLP in Tampa, we have put together an All-Star Panel (and perhaps unprecedented in LPM) of Women Law Firm Managers for a presentation the likes of which has never been seen or heard in the Federation.

Knowing that women now make up the majority of law students and the majority of new lawyers coming into the profession, the LPM is presenting something that, once again, is applicable to all Federation Members.  Teresa Arnold-Simmons, who manages Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A.'s Jacksonville, Florida office, Rayma Church, who manages Emerson Church in Fresno, California, and Heidi Goebel, who manages Goebel Anderson, P.C. in Salt Lake City, Utah, will, with Lauren Curtis acting as moderator, present Women Managers Discuss Law Firm Management.  For the first time in the LPM annals, an all-women panel will provide keen and detailed insight into women's perspective as to law firm management.  It is surely to be one not to be missed!  Stay tuned for more details as we get closer to the 2018 Winter Meeting.

AUGUST 2017

Here is hoping that all who attended the fabulous event of the Summer that was FDCC Montreux 2017 brought back wonderful memories, candid recollections, and detailed insight to share with all FDCC Members, present and future.  Special thanks to LPM Vice Chair John Quinn, as well as Sheryl Willert and FDCC Products Liability Section Chair, Matt Cairns for presenting In Advance of the Crisis: An Ounce of Prevention and Preparation.  As LPM Section Chair, I am deeply indebted to the panel and uniquely to Matt for stepping in for LPM Vice Chair, Mike Shalhoub at the last moment.  I understand that the presentation was both very well attended and received.  For those who did not get the chance to attend, please check back to the FDCC LPM Section web page in the near future, because the Panel's materials, loaded with very good, practical advice, will be posted for Members.

Were that not enough, in July of each year, we both lose and gain new Vice Chairs.  To this end, I want to thank the following outgoing LPM Vice Chairs for their service in the 2016-2017 Year - Mike Shalhoub, Chris DePhillips, and Edward Stewart.  To each, as they say where I am from - "Good numbers to y'all."  I am honored to work with returning Vice Chairs, John Quinn and John Trimble for the 2017-2018 Year.  Joining John, John, and me for 2017-2018 are new Vice Chairs, Marshall Wall, Thomas Dixon, and Lauren Curtis.  Welcome, y'all, and hold on, because it's going to be in the words of Old Crow Medicine Show - "a real humdinger!" in LPM for 2017-2018.

JUNE 2017

GO, GO, GO to MONTREUX, MONTREUX, MONTREUX!!!  At the FDCC Annual Meeting in Montreux, LPM Vice Chairs Mike Shahloub and John Quinn along with Sheryl Willert will be presenting In Advance of the Crisis: An Ounce of Prevention and Preparation.  Given the terrorist and internet hacking events in the last 30 days alone, that LPM is presenting a program designed to assist us all in designing a plan of action, including systems and procedures, to implement when (not if!) a crisis occurs could not be more opportune!  Expect this one to be standing-room only, because all of us, not just some, can bring back takeaways from what will be such a relevant presentation, Federation-wide.

MAY 2017
If you have not yet made plans to be in Montreux this Summer for the FDCC Annual Meeting, you really ought to consider going.  LPM Vice Chairs Mike Shahloub and John Quinn along with Sheryl Willert will be presenting:

In Advance of the Crisis: An Ounce of Prevention and Preparation, a program designed to assist you in designing systems and procedures to help effectively deal with the crisis if one occurs.  There are things that lawyers and firms can do proactively to prepare for crises and to help manage it as it unfolds.  The LPM Panel will walk through some of the things we can all do today to help minimize the damage of a potential crisis tomorrow.  Given today's headline news story of the cyber-attacks arising out of the NSA code leaks, this is a "don't miss" presentation.

APRIL 2017

Wow!  Better yet - WOW!  For those among y'all who missed last week's FDCC/IADC Joint Law Firm management Conference in Chicago, I cannot tell you just how many "things one never thinks of" and "So, THAT's what y'all do!" came up.

Among the many takeaways from the conference were these 10 which apply to all of us across the board:

 1.    Read your firm's insurance policy on hacking events and check if there are sub-limits!

 2.    Check with your IT Vendor and find out exactly what service is being provided and at what cost.

 3.    If you have not conducted a firm "fire drill" with your back-up system, what are you waiting on?

 4.    Does your firm have a Succession Plan, and if not, then why and what are you doing to implement one?

 5.    Consider the role of business development as opposed to marketing.

 6.    The Big Buzz right now is artificial intelligence will soon begin to replace associates.

 7.    Predictive Technology will not only learn your habits, but it will bill your time before you can.

 8.    Millennials do not live to work - they work to live.

 9.    Balancing the preservation of the law firm culture with the flexibility of remote and virtual practice.

10.   Have you read your insurance policy yet?  Checked on your IT vendor yet?  What are you waiting for?

Kudos to FDCC Superstars such as John Trimble, Mike Bonasso, Bob Christie, and Kile Turner for amazing and thought-provoking presentations!  Mega-kudos to FDCC's own Johnny Sarber for putting together a conference and program which will affect the practice of all attendees going forward.

Coming Up

If you have not yet made plans to be in Montreux this Summer for the FDCC Annual Meeting, you really ought to consider going.  The LPM Section Presentation is coming together, and LPM Vice Chairs Mike Shahloub and John Quinn have got a really amazing program in store.  More on that next month!
