FDCC Membership is limited, selective, and by nomination only. Election is by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of an independent Admissions Committee charged with the responsibility of making a careful investigation into the qualifications of each nominee to insure that those selected have distinguished themselves professionally. Current membership is slightly over 1400 and includes members from each of the United States plus Australia,Canada, Europe, Puerto Rico, and other areas.
Members are: (1) practicing lawyers actively engaged in the private practice of law who devote a substantial amount of their professional time to the representation of insurance companies, associations or other corporations, or others, in the defense of civil litigation and have been a member of the bar for at least eight years; or (2) corporate counsel and other executives engaged in the administration or defense of claims or for insurance companies, associations, or corporations who have national, regional or company-wide responsibility for a company of greater than local significance.
All nominees must be of high professional standing and of good moral character.
A limit is placed upon the number of lawyers in private practice who can be members. Guidelines are used by the Admissions Committee to encourage geographic distribution of membership. The Federation prefers to keep its rolls an appropriate size to enable the members to know each other and to be able to meet in a variety of suitable facilities. It remains large enough to be important, yet small enough to be personal.
