From the President
Federation Exceptionalism

What a great meeting we had in Montreux, Switzerland!  We owe a big thank you to Ned and Sue Currie for a memorable convention and to Todd and Debbie Roberts for a very interesting program and always friendly registration.  I also want to thank Mills and Carol Anne Gallivan for their leadership and dedication to the Federation this past year - we are forever in your debt.  There is no better ambassador for the FDDC than Mills and he has left the organization in great shape.

My kids asked me what I was most looking forward to this year as President of the FDCC.  The answer is easy, I am incredibly excited about the opportunities that lay before us.  Never before has there been the chance for the Federation to shine as there is today.

That may sound crazy in turbulent times where the practice of law is changing at warp speed and there is a proliferation of legal organizations that are little more than popularity contests or pay to play groups. But as Winston Churchill said, "Kites rise highest against the wind - not with it."

Membership in the FDCC is different from every other defense organization.  Our members define who and what we are because Federation membership has always been earned based upon an unrivaled admission process.  This distinguishes us from the others.

Through the winds of change, we have held true to our principles that our members must not only be the top attorneys, but also of the highest character.  This results in 15-20% of our nominations being rejected; a fact that would be unheard of in any other defense organization.  As a result, today's Federation roster is the equivalent of baseball's '27 Yankees or basketball's  '17 Golden State Warriors - from top to bottom we are the preeminent defense organization.

This coming year we are going to make sure that the rest of the world knows about the Federation's exceptionalism in all facets of what we do.  To make sure we get the message right, we hired a national advertising firm to help us develop the messaging and strategy to get the word out about the FDCC.

The result is the ACT initiative which stands for Attract, Connect and Transform and is being headed up by Alison Christian, Heidi Goebel, Frank Ramos and Marisa Trasatti.  This is a comprehensive visibility campaign through which we aim to attract new members and connect with them in a variety of ways that will transform the entire organization.

Among other things, ACT will spread the word about the FDCC through social media, videos and innovative programming ideas to corporate and insurance industry representatives.  We have also developed an unprecedented package of benefits for our corporate and industry members which is designed to enhance the value of their membership and allow us to achieve our goal of adding 100 more this coming year.
ACT is just the tip of the iceberg.  We have developed many other exciting initiatives this year for you relating to programming, membership and technology training that will enhance the Federation's reputation for exceptionalism and in turn, the value of your membership.  I will share the details of these programs throughout the year.

Our goal was to hit the ground running this year and with the help of dozens of members, we have done just that.  So, buckle up and get ready for a terrific year!

Scott Kreamer

2017 Annual Meeting in Montreux, Switzerland

Here's Looking At You Kid . . .

We'll Always Have Montreux

Not quite the order of the dialogue between Rick and Ilsa in perhaps the most memorable scene in the movie Casablanca, but wholly apropos as we glance back on our week in the Swiss Riviera.  Over 480 members, spouses, guests and children converged upon the lovely town by Lake Geneva - Montreux, Switzerland -for Mills and Carole Anne Gallivan's last meeting as President and First Lady of the Federation.  And in typical Mills and Carole Anne style, the meeting ended with a bang.  Literally.

The week began in Zurich on Monday, July 24 with a successful and well attended "Bridging the Insurance Gap Summit" planned and hosted by Rich Traub and our Swiss Ambassador, Christian Lang.  The meeting ended on Friday July 28 with a masquerade ball in the great European tradition.  Only this time smoke on the water came from the terrace dance floor to the soulful sounds of Time Machine and a thrilling fireworks display over the Lake.  And in between the week's first and last days occurred so much - what with Todd Roberts' amazing programs, the elegance of the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, and Federation activities bringing to life the glory of the Swiss Alps - that we'll be talking about Montreux for years to come.

Tuesday, July 25, was Fellowship Day offering tours of Glacier 3000 in Les Diablerets, Old Town Bern and Old Town Lausanne.  Other favorite afternoon venues ran from breathtaking views of Lake Geneva from atop Rochers de Naye, Alpine hiking, touring the ancient castle Chateau de Chillon, wine tasting in the historic Lavaux, lunch cruises on Lake Geneva, to the finest tradition of Swiss chocolate making.   And in a first for the Federation, Aya Sever led a foot-tour of the Hemingway Trail celebrating the many famous writers whose classic works were influenced by the Montreux and Lake Geneva environs.  Who will ever forget our evening in Gruyeres, the beautiful medieval walled village where we celebrated the President's Reception honoring Mills and Carol Anne, complete with a traditional Swiss meal of fondue and raclette (and even a cheese-pot campfire at one of the tables!).  The Theme Party brought out our inner Charlie Chaplin as we enjoyed an excursion and tour of Chaplin's World in Vevey.  Other evenings were celebrated on the hotel terrace overlooking Lake Geneva under the stars.

Todd Roberts' many innovative and forward looking programs included a personal welcome from the Mayor of Montreux, drones and drone technology, the Swiss way of life, and drama in the courtroom as Neil Goldberg wrapped his Trial Masters series on the Buffalo airline crash litigation.  Bob Christie wowed us with litigation technology at our fingertips.  Highlighting the week's programming was a series of inspiring speakers addressing diversity and inclusion, capped by a moving finale from our Keynote Speaker and international human rights activist Nontombi Tutu.  Congratulations to Todd for keeping us glued to our seats during all three plenary sessions.

At the final plenary business meeting Mills passed the gavel to our new President Scott Kreamer, who introduced two of his initiatives - ACT and Evolve - about which we will learn more and experience in the days to come.  We look forward to Scott and Susan's year and what it will bring to the Federation Nation.  Goodbye Montreux - we came, we saw, we enjoyed, and will never forget!

Ned and Sue Currie

FDCC Corporate Counsel Symposium in Philadelphia!

The Corporate Counsel Symposium ("CCS") Committee invites you to join us at the Hotel Sofitel in Philadelphia beginning on Sunday, September 17 at 3:00 pm for a fast paced and timely legal conference "A New World View: How Corporate Counsel Understand Risk." This program, devoted to In-house and outside counsel, will run, and I do mean run, until noon on Tuesday, September 19.

The CCS is celebrated as the preeminent conference for corporate counsel and outside defense counsel in America. We are again offering complimentary (also known as free) registration to all in-house counsel. Due to the overwhelming response to this new policy last year, space may be at a premium for this year's event. Therefore, we recommend you register early to ensure your spot at the CCS (and for a room at the hotel). We strongly encourage our outside counsel FDCC members to attend with a corporate counsel client and extend your invitations early before registration closes.

If you have not seen the CCS brochure yet, please click here.  As you can see, the Committee has put together an incredible program. We have highly respected in-house counsel from companies such as AT&T, Boston Scientific Corporation, FedEx, Ford Motor Company, Kroger, Pfizer, Sun Chemical, TE Connectivity and Wal-Mart. You will also hear from esteemed outside counsel and government representatives.
  • The program will commence on Sunday afternoon with a presentation on best practices for managing E-discovery. The panel will discuss what if any impact, the recent amendments to the federal rules have had on companies and their attorneys.

  • The Honorable Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., an attorney currently with King & Spalding, who from 2003 to 2007 served as the 60th governor of Maryland, will provide an overview of what to expect from inside the beltway between now and 2020. Having served as Governor, U.S. Congressman, Maryland state Delegate, and civil litigator counseling clients on an array of government matters, including health care, finance and economic development, Governor Ehrlich will offer a unique perspective on what's coming down the pike.

  • Sunday afternoon will finish with an all-star panel focusing on diversity and inclusion in law firms and the courtroom. As many companies have been, the Courts are now encouraging law firms and their clients to have first chairs filled by women and minorities.  This should be a topic of vital importance to in-house and outside counsel alike.

Sunday evening, we will provide a networking opportunity for the attendees featuring adult beverages and heavy apps.

Monday morning programming will pick up right where Sunday leaves off.
  • Mercedes Colwin and Rich Traub will join us to moderate a panel of chief executives on what they think we may anticipate from some of the policies that have or will come out of the White House and Capitol Hill and how they may impact their organizations. This will be a conversation you will not want to miss.

  • Following that, we will feature a panel of general counsel who will address those issues from a legal perspective and if time allows, how the C-suite now views the legal function. Where in-house counsel are now viewed as more of a business partner to help the company achieve its goals and objectives.

  • The morning concludes with our keynote speaker, the Honorable Michael Mukasey, a lawyer and former federal judge who served as the 81st Attorney General of the United States, appointed by President George W. Bush.

Monday afternoon will focus upon legal issues facing in-house counsel - everything from compliance to crisis management to managing outside counsel relationships. The day will conclude with a panel discussing a "day in the life of in-house counsel." For those of you that have never worked in-house, will be an eye-opener. We think the byline should be: Take a Walk on the Wild Side.

Monday evening we will have our dine arounds featuring some of the tremendous restaurants of Center City Philly. For our SoCal lawyers, the Dodgers will be in town Monday night, maybe a gathering could be had for the game?

Tuesday morning will be rocking, everything from workplace violence to employment issues that keep in-house counsel up at night.  We are also fortunate to have the Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, Philip Miscimarra, join us to provide his insight on the future of labor law under the new administration.

This program will then end with a presentation on solutions to ethical dilemmas plaguing in-house counsel, yes that always-needed credit hour of ethics.

To date we have seen record registration, if you want to learn how corporate counsel from leading companies understand risk we urge you to register today so you will not risk being shut out from attending what promises to be a great program. On behalf of the CCS committee, we hope to "See you in September."
